About Us

This fund was established by the Rev. Dr. Lawrence Mascarenhas, born & educated in India, who is a retired Anglican priest and a citizen of Canada, residing in Vernon, BC.

Why did you start this fund?

“With the population of India soaring past 1 billion I realized the necessity of education to make even modest reduction of poverty in the country. I was privileged to have an opportunity to live in a city where schools were opened and run efficiently with qualified teachers. Such schools (often called ‘private’) required fees. My parents borrowed money to educate a large family. With a good foundation in a good school I was able to pursue a University education after graduating from High School. In a developing country like India, University education is a necessity for progress individually and communally, secure better living, good health and prosperity. I was given all this during war time. I felt deeply grateful for what I received. I decided on starting a fund to help others less fortunate unable to pursue higher education.”

What has education meant to you in your life?

“Education continues all through life. It provides us knowledge of ourselves, body, mind and spirit. It equips us to earn a living, provide for the needs of a family, live in dignity, fostering a better world for all.”
